Configuring PC Hardware and Software Inventory

Purpose: To setup PC Inventory.

Prerequisites: Novo installation.

Note: PC Inventory is regulated by the Novo Solutions license.  If the software is setup correctly but doesn't work as expected, contact Novo Solutions to ensure the appropriate license has been given to you.

The Novo PC Inventory module uses the Windows Management Instrumentation service to collect PC Data.  In order for the module to work correctly, the 3 requirements below must be met:
  1. The Windows Management Instrumentation service must be enabled on all workstations for which you wish to collect data
  2. An exception in the Firewall (Windows or any other firewall) must be added to all machines to be queried.
  3. A hidden share to NovoRoot\pc_inventory\Current should be created with appropriate write permissions.
The recommended method for meeting the above requirements is to create or modify a Group Policy Object (GPO) logon script in Active Directory to run the necessary commands as outlined in this article.  The GPO logon script can be applied to specific objects (i.e. Sites, Domains, OU's). This will grant you more control over which machines you want queried as well as assist with compliance to respective security policies. As an alternative, you could edit the Default Domain Policy GPO logon script. However, this will enable the WMI service and Windows Firewall exception for all machines.

To inventory Windows 2003 servers, the WMI Windows Installer Provider component must be installed. (see Configuring Windows Server 2003 for PC Inventory below)
